Save That Cow!
During this drought ponds may become dangerously boggy before drying
Was that cow which bogged down in your pond worth $500? If so, the following article from the Noble Foundation newsletter written by Mike Porter might help you save the next one, cut your losses and also allow you to get a little more grazing from a pasture with a boggy pond. An electrical fence as described below with a prepared entry could be a good investment. Just be sure to have good footing in all of the shallow water within the fence. Building the fence might be more fun and cheaper than dragging a dead cow to the back forty. A rocked and graveled entry surrounded with a few cattle panels hung on long T-posts in the pond with conventional wire fencing around the pond could also do the trick
This photo from the Noble Foundation shows a prepared pond entryway with rock and gravel. It is electrically fenced out into the pond to control usage by livestock.
