FANNIN COUNTY 4-H FORESTRY TEAMS WIN SOUTHERN REGIONALS

Six members of the Fannin County 4-H Forestry team attended the Southern National Forestry/Woodland contest held at the 4-H Center in Little Rock Arkansas.

(L-R) Fourth Place Team Jennifer Bryan, Heather Trimble and Micala Michaud: First place team were Katja Brinlee,(high point individual), Ashley Trimble and Sam Trimble.

The Fannin County 4-H Forestry Team attended the Texas State Forestry /Woodland contest where they placed second and fourth. James Moore was the high point individual in the contest. The wins in this contest qualified the teams to attend the Southern Regional contest. James Moore and Erin Michaud were unable to attend the Southern Regional contest as they were in Austin interviewing for college scholarships.

To be able to compete in these contests these students had to learn how to identify most of the hardwood trees, shrubs and vines in East Texas. They also had to know the importance of these plants for wildlife. They learned how to thin a stand of pine timber, rate the productivity of land for timber production, and conduct increment borings to know proper tree growth.  They had to identify blocks of wood as to the type of tree they came from, use a compass and proper pacing to arrive at a designated location and learn how to calculate the board feet of timber in a pine forest.

The Fannin County 4-H Forestry Team attended the May 22 meeting of the County Commissioners Court where they received congratulations for their hard work and dedication. The 4-H team are shown with Chris Schraeder, County Extension Agent and County Judge Derrell Hall.

The Fannin Soil and Water Conservation District are proud of the achievements of these young people and with the help of the Lennox Foundation Grant are proud to sponsor them in their endeavors.
